Boston’s Papa Swan (2021)

In June 2021, a quiet heartbreak unfolded on Boston's Charles River Esplanade when a beloved nesting mother swan unexpectedly passed away, leaving behind her partner and a nest of newly hatched cygnets. Days later, while cycling along the Storrow Lagoon, I witnessed an extraordinary, bittersweet moment of resilience: the single father swan gliding through the water, carrying his entire remaining family safely on his back.

The resulting photographs struck a chord with millions worldwide, particularly parents and fathers. Featured by outlets like GBH's Greater Boston, CNN International, The Today Show, and People, the image resonated not because it was a simple, bright fairy tale, but because it captured a profound truth about the natural world: the striking juxtaposition of grief and devotion, tragedy and triumph. For me, this moment remains a defining testament to why I carry a camera, to capture the unexpected ways nature mirrors our own struggles, brings out our shared humanity, and reminds us of our capacity to carry on.
